The Student Financial Services (SFS) Counselor provides information to prospective and enrolled students and families related to financial aid and student accounts. This includes counseling on the financial aid process, aid eligibility, and financing options. The SFS Counselor responds to inquiries via email, phone, and in person appointments. This position assists students in resolving past due account balances, establishes & processes in-house payment arrangements. This position also manages all delinquent student accounts. The SFS Counselor will assist in managing student billing and refunds. 

Job Responsibilities:

Counseling students and families:       40%

  • Answer financial aid and student accounts inquiries (via phone, email, mail, in person).
  • Counsel students/parents/families on the financial aid application process, provide explanations of financial aid awards, eligibility and need determination, and payment options. Assist with completion of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), verification, and loan steps.
  • Answer questions related to Federal, State, and Institutional financial aid programs.

Accounts Receivables:     40%

  • Process and manage collection of delinquent student accounts (in-house and third party).
  • Process and manage collection of current student accounts (payments, payment plans, checks & cash received).
  • Correspond with students regarding due dates, past due balances, payment plans, etc. via email, phone, and letters.
  • Review accounts with outstanding balances for accuracy and investigate account issues.
  • Assist students with various questions regarding their account including, but not limited to billing, payments, holds, and refunds.
  • Assess late fees and mange student billing holds.
  • Cardinal Cash processing and management.
  • Disburse and maintain petty cash.
  • Process and manage PREP (payment/reimbursement from employer plan).
  • Create and update reports regarding status of accounts receivable.

Additional duties:   20%

  • Reconciliation of Title IV programs (Pell Grants, Teach Grants, Federal Direct Student Loans).
  • Backup support to Director of Student Accounts (billing & refund process, NelNet management).
  • Other duties as assigned.
